Abstraction: Tramlines and Mark Marking

Abstraction: Tramlines and Mark Marking

These were developed on a thoroughly enjoyable abstract art course with the inspiring Brain Raymond at AWOL Studios, Manchester [www.creativeartcourses.org] in February 2020.  I was getting back into my groove of painting and yearning to experiment.  It is wonderful trying something new even if it doesn’t work out the first time.

All Acrylic on 250gsm textured paper

Conversations:

These A5 images developed from the brief to create a conversation between 5 people.  At the time I had a really frustrating week at work and all I could think of were the difficult conversations that had transpired.

There is usually one person, wherever you are, who is always much louder and way more opinionated.  Creating these images in that moment was immensely therapeutic.

Tramlines:

I loved experimenting using a palette knife and the challenge to work in different colours and tones to the original subject, which in this scenario was based on field tramlines from an aerial photo.

Mark Making:

These two pieces are from experimenting with line and form but make interesting images on their own.

“Do not be too timed and squeamish about your actions.  All life is an experiment”

(Ralph Waldo Emerson)
